ABOUT THE FILM

The hamsters live and work in Hamsterland, a perfect state with a perfect economy. The GDP grows steadily, there is no unemployment, and 100% of the population declare themselves to be happy. Of course, just as in any attempt to arrange a perfect society by force, the world of the hamsters also has its dark side, which we gradually discover during the course of the film.

The short animation film by Ana Nedjelković and Nikola Majdak.

The project is realised in the co-production of Bas-Čelik (RS) and Finta Studio (SI). The production was supported by Serbian Film Fund, Slovinian Film Center, the programme of European Union Creative Europe MEDIA.

ABOUT THE FILM

It was at night of April 25, 1986 that the explosion, that destroyed the reactor of Unit 4 of Chernobyl’s nuclear power plant, also destroyed the lives and health of an unknown number of people in the former Soviet Union and not only there. The consequences of this tragedy were more tragic because the Soviet authorities took advantage of the fact that radiation seems quite safe at first sight. You do not see it, you do not feel it and, at first, you do not even notice how harmful it is to you. Many people were therefore exposed without knowing it and they received large doses of radiation. But the people may not have received it at all! They didn’t have to, because they were not people who were directly in the plant or in the immediate vicinity of the plant at the time of the explosion. They were people who came into contact with the contaminated material later, often under quite strange circumstances and always quite unnecessarily. When a disaster occurs in a totalitarian state, the attempt to cover up its consequences leads to another disaster, that is equally or even more dangerous and lasts years or even decades.

The film Once There Was a Town… is a surreal tale of a radioactive sausage and a several-metres-high mountain of contaminated wool, which the director watches while riding an old, crumbling Ferris wheel in the centre of Pripyat – an abandoned town. It’s an animated documentary about immense human stupidity and the consequences of strange political decisions that most affect the lives of people who were powerless against the force of those decisions.

ABOUT THE FILM

Once There Was a Sea…: The Story of Aral Sea is short animated documentary about the Aral Sea. Most of the changes in climate and landscape in the area of the Aral Sea are the outcomes of one of the worst man-made eco-catastrophes in human history. The Aral Sea is dying. The idea of the film Once There Was a Sea…: The Story of Aral Sea came to mind of director Joanna Kozuch during her train trips through the region of Middle Asia in 2008 and 2014. The film is inspired by the place on the borders of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and the stories and destinies of the people that she has met when I was exploring the disaster of Aral Sea.

Once There Was a Sea…: The Story of Aral Sea is a film about consequences of human decisions and actions, how they can affect daily life of one Uzbek town and its inhabitants. As the reporter Ryszard Kapuściński states it: “There is no such a nonsense human mind could not invent.”

The animated documentary by Joanna Kozuch.

The project is realised in co-production of Anima-Pol (PL), plackartnyj (SK), TVP (PL), EC1 Lodz (PL) and Radio and Television Slovakia (SK). The project was financially supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, the Polish Film Institute, the programme of European Union Creative Europe MEDIA,  the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, the Bratislava Self-Governing Region and Literary Fund. The international sales agent of the film is Miyu Distribution.

ABOUT THE FILM

Last human stories from the glittering bottom of dying Aral Sea.

Svetlana stares into the salt desert with her only eye. Gulshat runs an empty hotel. Captain records traces of the vanishing sea, and Sergei drives tourists across its bare, glittering seabed. The last people of Mo´ynoq who remember the original shore of drying Aral Sea… Their days are intertwined with memories of the glorious past of the fishing power and dreams of the return of the great water. The present is a cemetery of ships that will never set sail from the port again.

ABOUT THE FILM

An apartment building full of self centered inhabitants. Utterly exhausted caretaker and his sexually frustrated wife. Widowed deer drowning his sorrows in loads of alcohol… While trying to cope with their problems, they find themselves in a hard to solve triangle asking for absurd and irrational solutions. The consequences can easily become permanent, sometimes maybe too permanent. The film is a loose adaptation of a well-known biblical story while transforming it into an contemporary ironic narrative about how the world sometimes works.

A short animated film by David Štumpf and Michaela Mihályi.

The project is realised in the co-production of BFILM.cz (CZ), FAMU (CZ), Bagan Films (FR) and Arte (FR). MICHAELA MIHÁLYIOVÁ 

Michaela Mihályi (1991) is currently studying animation at FAMU in Prague, where she lives as well. She previously studied animation at VŠMU in Bratislava. She has an interest in telling stories using various techniques, from hand-drawn, cut-out to puppet animation. Besides school work, she works as a freelance animation director and illustrator. She loves beer and coffee equally.

DAVID ŠTUMPF

David Štumpf (1991) finished his BA studies at VŠMU in Bratislava with the film Cowboyland that has been selected for festivals in Annecy, Stuttgart or Hiroshima and it has won several awards at home and internationally. David is now living in Prague where he is finishing his MA degree at FAMU with the film SH_T HAPPENS. He also works as a freelance director and animator.

ABOUT THE FILM

The Kite deals with the issue of death, but it does so in a simple metaphorical and symbolic way on the relationship between the little boy and his grandpa. It explains that none of us are here forever and that all living creatures must die, but also to show that death doesn’t mean the end of our journey.

A little boy visits his old grandfather in the countryside and they fly a kite together. They are both made out of layers, which symbolize their age. The boy has many of these layers. He is perspective, because he has all his life before him. But grandfather, on the other hand, has already lost most of his layers and he has only few left. As he gets older, he also gets thinner, and at the end of his life, he is as thin as a sheet of paper. One day, the wind just softly blows him away and takes him up to the sky…

A short stop-motion film by Martin Smatana.

The project is realised in co-production of BFILM.cz (CZ), FAMU (CZ) and CeTA studio (PL). The  realisation was supported by Czech Film Fund, Slovak Audiovisual Fund, Foundation Filmtalent Zlín, Tatra banka Foundation and Literary Fund. The international sales agent of the film is Magnetfilm.

MARTIN SMATANA

Martin (1991) is a graduate of the Department of Animation at FAMU, Prague. During his bachelor studies he completed an internship in Nukufilm studio in Tallinn, Estonia. For 5 years he was leading workshops of animation for children. His debut film Rosso Papavero was premiered at Berlinale 2015 Generation Kplus and won 13 international awards.

ABOUT THE FILM

Untravel is a story about the fear of crossing boundaries and the possibilities to overcome it. It is a story about the relationship between personal and political boundaries, and the complex relationship between patriotism, tourism and emigration, as well as the relationships between utopias, dystopias and reality. The inspiration for the film is a personal trauma which occurred as a result of the country’s isolation, the inability to travel and the situation created after the abolition of the visa regime in Serbia. However, the idea of the film is to present that topic in a universal manner without any local references. The film addresses several parallel questions: How much and in what way do state borders shape our personal space? What are the far-reaching consequences of the isolation of a country and the inability to travel? What is the contrast between the romantic ideal of a tourist travel and the need to escape from the country where the basic livelihood of people is endangered? 

A new stop-motion film by Ana Nedeljković and Nikola Majdak.

The project is realised in the co-production of BAŠ ČELIK (RS) and Arte (FR). The realisation was supported by Film Center Serbia and Slovak Audiovisual Fund. The international sales agent of this film is Radiator IP Sales.

Her beauty is breathtaking, and the way she dances and moves will haunt your dreams. In a tiny forgotten bar, the evenings belong to her and her only. The bartender is desperately in love with her, the patrons are mesmerized. That is until a surprise guest turns up – a young man who uncovered the secret of her powers.

Mária (1988) graduated ŠUV (School of Applied Arts) in Kremnica and studied animation at the Film and Television Faculty, Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. She spent one semester at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in Lisboa (Portugal). She worked as an animator on TV series Mimi and Liza and also on several animation comercial advertisments.

ABOUT THE FILM

In the beginning there was nothing. At the end we gave birth to our daughter Mila. 

39 weeks, 6 days is an artistic experiment, animated diary and personal documentary showing animated self-portraits of woman and man, married couple and co-authors during 40 weeks of the gravidity. Each of the directors/husbands perceived this period in different and very unique way. This Trinitarian phase of their life remains in existence thru associative memorials of emotions and collage of imaginative film scenes combined with surrealistic projections in film 39 weeks, 6 days.

Short experimental animated film by Joanna Kozuch and Boris Šima.

The project is realised in co-production of plackartnyj (SK). The realisation was supported by Slovak Audiovisual Fund, Bratislava Self-Governing Region and Literary Fund.

JOANNA KOZUCH

Joanna (1977) graduated at Fine Art studies of University of Arts in Poznan. As an artist Joanna participated on several exhibitions and co-operated on animation shorts productions (The Last Bus, Stones). She is also a teacher on Animation department at Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where she finished her PhD. studies. Her film debut Fongopolis won in 2014 Anča Slovak Award and national film award Sun in the Net for the best animation. Nowdays she is also preparing short animated documentary Once there was a sea…

BORIS ŠIMA

Boris (1977) studied Animated Film at the UTB in Zlín, Czech Republic. From 1998 to 2003 he studied at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava, at the Department of Animated Film. His filmography includes Today is my first date (2002), Catch him! (2008) and Off To The Castle! (2012). Now he is working on TV series Mimi and Lisa and Websters by Katarina Kerekesova.

ABOUT THE FILM

The young woman left the parent’s house and cannot adapt herself in the new environment. This will change when she fells in love. But love quickly changes to the addiction to the new partner. After discovering her own liberty she is able to understand her life and her parents.

This short animation film by Daniela Krajčová is realised by the technic of drawing by chalk on the blackboard.

The realisation was supported by Slovak Audiovisual Fund and Tatra Banka Foundation.

DANIELA KRAJČOVÁ

Daniela (1983) is graduated of the Department of Intermedias and Multimedias of The Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU) in Bratislava and of the Department of Animation of the Film and Television Faculty, Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. She was also studing animation at University of the West of England in Bristol and at Universidad Veracruzana in Jalapa (Mexico). In 2007 a 2009 she was the finalist of the Essl Award. In 2009 she represented Slovakia at Berlinale Talent Campus in Berlíne. She is not only animator or videoartist, but also the artist. She had several exibitions in Slovakia and abroad (Galéria Medium, Kulturpark, Open gallery, Jeune Creation Européene, B2 gallery etc.) In 2014 she finished her PhD studies at VŠVU.
